Authorities intercept human traffickers on sailboat from Lefkada

The Greek Ministry of Shipping and Island Policy revealed on Tuesday that two men, one Turkish, the other a Czech, one of whom was captured by Greek and Italian Coast Guard patrol boats on Monday along the Italian coast, had rented a sailing vessel from the Greek island of Lefkada to transport at least a dozen people to Italy.

Moreover, the Shipping Ministry says that the two men chartered the vessel on the pretext of touring the Greek islands, but the vessel’s owner was alarmed when GPS data showed it exited Greek maritime boundaries and began to sail in Italian waters.

After the vessel was declared stolen, the Greek and Italian Coast Guard pursued it and captured it, detaining one of the charterers, four possible migrants with fake Greek IDs, and another 12 migrants inside the vessel.
