Foreign national found strangled in detention in Elefsina; autopsy pending

A foreign national, 52, who was found dead in his detention cell after accusations of sexual abuse appears to have killed himself, the Elefsina Coast Guard said on Monday night.

The man was accused by a woman, 41, that he had tried to abuse her while she was sitting on a low wall on Kanellopoulou Street in Elefsina. She pointed him out to police, who found a knife on him and detained him. Police had requested genetic material analysis of both.

When the Coast Guard went to the detention cell to pick him up and transfer the man to the prosecutor, they found him strangled by a sheet around his neck tied to a wall pipe. Tzannio Hospital confirmed his death, while the Coast Guard is investigating it and an autopsy is pending.
