Greece sends aerial firefighting assistance to Lebanon under EU program

Greece sent two Canadair CL-415 amphibious firefighting aircraft to Lebanon on Tuesday, to help with the efforts to contain the forest fires burning near the capital of Beirut since Sunday, Greece’s civil protection secretariat said on Tuesday.

The aircraft departed Elefsina airport at 16:00 by order of Civil Protection Secretary General Nikos Chardalias, who responded to Lebanon’s request for aerial firefighting assistance from rescEU, the EU’s disaster mechanism.

Cyprus and Italy have also responded through the rescEU program.
