Greek trade deficit down in April, up in first four months of 2019

Greek exports were growing twice as fast as imports in April, helping the country’s trade deficit to shrink by 5.2 pct in the month, although the trade deficit rose 7.7 pct in the first four months of the year, Hellenic Statistical Authority said.

The statistics service said that the value of import-arrivals totaled 4.585 billion euros in April, from 4.361 billion in April last year, an increase of 5.1 pct (excluding oil products imports rose 10.3 pct while excluding oil products and ships imports grew 11.3 pct). The value of export-deliveries amounted to 2.931 billion euros in April, up 12.1 pct from the same month last year (excluding oil products exports rose 11.7 pct while excluding oil products and ships exports rose 12.6 pct). The country’s trade deficit totaled 1.654 billion euros in April, down 5.2 pct from April 2018 (excluding oil products the trade deficit rose 8.4 pct while excluding oil products and ships the trade deficit increased by 9.5 pct).

In the January-April period, the value of imports totaled 18.559 billion euros, up 5.7 pct from the same period in 2018 (excluding oil products imports rose 7.2 pct while excluding oil products and ships imports rose 7.1 pct). The value of exports amounted to 10.943 billion euros, up 4.4 pct from the same period in 2018 (excluding oil products exports rose 6.1 pct while excluding oil products and ships exports rose 6.2 pct).

The country’s trade deficit totaled 7.717 billion euros in the January-April period, up 7.7 pct from 2018 (excluding oil products the trade deficit rose 8.6 pct while excluding oil products and ships the trade deficit grew 8.3 pct).
